Smoothies

Frozen fruit and veg are always useful for smoothies. You can even chop and freeze your own.

Bananas add a lovely sweet, creamy texture. Avocados also add a smoothness.

Always do a 'taste test' before you pour the smoothie out, to check the sweetness and adjust, if required, to suit your taste. You could add banana, apple, pineapple, mango or honey to sweeten.


Check the consistency.  If you use milled seeds or any powder the smoothie will be thick. Chia and flax seeds in particular absorb a lot of water and really thicken the mixture.

Strawberry Milkshake

Spinach, cucumber & pineapple

1/2 cup spinach

1/2 large cucumber, peeled and roughly chopped

3/4 cup chopped pineapple

2 Tbsp Mint

1 tsp agave nectar/maple syrup/ honey (adjust amount to taste)

Ice if desired

Add ingredients in order to blender. Blend until smooth.

Spirulina smoothie

1 medium ripe banana (can be frozen)

1/2 cup sliced cucumber (skin on)

3/4 - 1 cup coconut milk (or other non-dairy milk; less for thicker smoothie, more for thinner smoothie)

1 cup spinach or chopped kale (can be frozen)

1 tsp spirulina powder

1 Tbsp hemp seed (optional or sub chia seeds)

Add ingredients to blender. Blend until smooth.

Beetroot, apple and blueberry smoothie

2 small beetroots, roughly chopped

1 small apple

50g blueberries

1 tbsp grated root ginger

300ml water

Add ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

ABC juice

1 apple

1 beet

1 carrot

1/2 lemon

Water, as much as required

Ginger orange

2 oranges

1/3 lemon

A little fresh ginger root and turmeric root

Water, as much as required

Avocado smoothie

1/3 avocado 

1 celery stalk

1 tbsp chia seeds

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup coconut water

garnish with raspberries or chopped strawberries

Green ginger juice

3 apples

1 inch ginger

2 celery

1 cucumber

1 lime

Water, as much as required

Sweet ginger

1 cup blueberries

1 cup banana slices

1/2 cup pineapple, chopped

1 tbsp fresh ginger, chopped

2 tbsp honey

3-4 ice cubes

Water. as required

Berry chia

1/2 cup blueberries

1/2 cup raspberries/strawberries

1 handful spinach or kale/spinach mix

1 tsp chia seeds

1 cup coconut milk
